| Film shoot “AMELIA” flight - France to Africa and return by Lockheed 12 Electra |
Turtle-Pac FERRY 238 was used for extra fuel. Owner of Electra Mr Bernard Chabbert a noted aviator and author had this to say about the epic flight:
“Briefly, the act left France on July the 10th, right after adapting the tank inside the cabin just behind the cockpit. I had designed three crews overlapping the three chapters: ferry down to SA, filming all over South Africa, return ferry. The ferry down took 50.14 hours, including three days in internment in Equatorial Guinea where the crew was lured into landing there under the false announcement by the control tower in Malabo that there was avgas, now becoming very rare around Africa. It cost me 11000 euros labelled as "fine for violating the national airspace", in reality a ransom... Also there was no avgas in Luanda, Angola, where are located Africa's largest refineries, and we had to fly in from Namibia (5 hours) a Twin Otter bringing 1000 liters of 100 LL, at the total cost of 10 USD per liter... Your tank came in very handy there!
The filming across SA took 63 flight hours, and was absolutely fantastic. The film crew, with Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Christopher Eccleston, and
director Mira Nair, were ecstatic at the presence of the Electra, which is the mechanical star of "Amelia". The aerial scenes will be outstanding, including shots above Victoria Falls, Okavango desert and wildlife, and many different settings. The target for the production is to make a film even more impressive than "Out of Africa" in terms of aerial scenes. Some of the shootings were difficult, as far as piloting was concerned.
Then the return flight was probably the hardest part of the adventure, with the excitement of the film behind. We had decided that the act will be the first in history of aviation to completely circle the African continent, going down to the tip of Africa along the west coast, and flying back along the eastern part (see map on the site), in slightly over 90 flight hours. The avgas situation was difficult in Sudan, where the only choice was to use car gas bought in filling stations near airports in Juba and Khartoum. Again, your tank came in as a necessity because wherever avgas was available, the obvious choice was to embark some extra despite the overload.”
